Gaza’s Tunnel Phenomenon: The Unintended Dynamics of Israel’s Siege.

A similarly cavalier approach to child labor and tunnel fatalities damaged the movement’s standing with human-rights groups, despite government assurances dating back to 2008 that it was considering curbs. During a police patrol that the author was permitted to accompany in December 2011, nothing was done to impede the use of children in the tunnels, where, much as in Victorian coal mines, they are prized for their nimble bodies. At least 160 children have been killed in the tunnels, according to Hamas officials. Safety controls on imports appear similarly lax, although the TAC insists that a sixteen-man contingent carries out sporadic spot-checks.

Convert, Pay Tax, Or Die, Islamic State Warns Christians | Reuters.

Islamist insurgents have issued an ultimatum to northern Iraq’s dwindling Christian population to either convert to Islam, pay a religious levy or face death, according to a statement distributed in the militant-controlled city of Mosul.

The statement issued by the Islamic State, the al Qaeda offshoot which led last month’s lightning assault to capture swathes of north Iraq, and seen by Reuters, said the ruling would come into effect on Saturday.

It said Christians who wanted to remain in the “caliphate” that the Islamic State declared this month in parts of Iraq and Syria must agree to abide by terms of a “dhimma” contract – a historic practice under which non-Muslims were protected in Muslim lands in return for a special levy known as “jizya”.

Selective Outrage

London’s pro-Palestine rally was a disgusting anti-Semitic spectacle » Spectator Blogs.

But what a picture. These are the people who stayed at home throughout the Syrian civil war, stayed at home when ISIS rampaged across Iraq, stayed at home when Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab carried out their atrocities across central Africa and showed no concern whatsoever when the Muslim Brotherhood was running Egypt into the ground. Yet they pretend to care about Muslims.

And here they all are, coming out to scream because Israel is carrying out the most specific and targeted campaign in the history of warfare in order to stop Hamas – a group dedicated to the annihilation of all Jews – from firing thousands of rockets into the Jewish homeland.

Privatize The Pensions

The Plan Should Be 100% Employee Funded

Province threatens to terminate City of Regina pension plan – Saskatchewan – CBC News.

The Saskatchewan government is trying to light a fire under efforts to fix the City of Regina’s pension deficit problem. On Friday, provincial regulators sent a letter to pension officials saying they’re considering cancelling the registration of the Regina Civic Employees Superannuation and Benefit Plan. The province’s deputy superintendent of pensions says the plan hasn’t been meeting its minimum contribution for years. The official says the government has waited for the plan to come up with a new funding plan, but that hasn’t happened yet. If the plan is deregistered, it would be terminated.

Security Fail

Excerpts of Navy Yard report: 160 cameras and no one watching; facing down shooter – The Washington Post.

160 cameras, and no one watched.

A private security guard was in an office with monitors showing the feeds from 160 security cameras while the shootings occurred. Those cameras, police now know, covered almost every inch of Building 197 and were documenting in real time every move by gunman Aaron Alexis. But the guard locked the door, hid and notified no one that he was there with access to the information.

The lack of access to the camera feeds severely affected how hundreds of officers advanced on the shooting scene. The report by D.C. police even questions whether a D.C. officer would have been wounded by gunfire if the department had had access to the camera feeds and could have approached the suspect with better knowledge of his location.
