All omnivore either have a modified carnivore system (bears), or a modified herbivores digestive system (like humans). On another note our closest relative the chimp also eats meat, & I don’t mean bugs they kill, & eat monkeys & other small animals. On the topic of our k9 teeth. Gorillas only eat vegetables & there k9′s are huge. Ours are small because we don’t need them for defense. We have been omnivores for 3-4 evolutionary stages. The fact that you choose to live differently then your nature suggests a feeling of superiority to animals. It doesn’t take much for logic like that to become like Vicks. Although I do not eat red meat or in fact any fowl or mammal, I do eat fish, I also love cheese & drink milk. Eggs have too much fat so I only bake with them. The only reason I do this is I feel the way animals is slaughtered is wrong. If you eat meat you should earn it you’re self, & buying it doesn’t count. Also I do not value animals above my family, but I do value my animals as family. Also Vegans if you have dogs or cats. Then you are either hypocrites or animals abusers. Those animals are carnivores, it is wrong & un-healthy to make them eat differently. Cats don’t produce taurine without meat or meat based food they WILL go blind. On another note where do you get your vegetables? If it is famed then guess what more animals die for your salad then a steak. Farming harnesses & alters the land. It takes land animals NEED to survive, also much food is imported from countries where they practice slash & burn. Even if you food is organic & grown in some hippies back yard, that back yard was forest at one time. On another note soy reduces testosterone levels, & increases estrogen levels. The fact is as a professional athlete he signed something saying he would not have anything to do with illegal gambling. So even if he gets off he still can’t play foot ball again. Also a great man said a nation should be judged by how it treats it’s animals. Studies also show that people who can torture & kill animals ruthlessly are 90% more likely to be capable of doing the same thing to people. So it is our business. Also it is against the law, so he should be punished. I am not Buddhist, but I believe according to there beliefs if you are mean to animals intentionally for your own enjoyment you spend your after life being hurt by those animals. Basically ate alive for all eternity. But I digress according to the bible: Proverbs 12:10 – Man should care for the life of his beast, but the compassion of the wicked is cruel. Hey atheist vegan, your point is easily refutable. Farm animals are euthenized humanely on most farms, they’re strictly regulated and there are ordnances that keep them in check. Those animals aren’t ripped apart while alive then electrocuted
to death or hung like MV did. Moreover, those animals are eaten, not thrown into a dumpster after people profit from gambling from it. Hey jackman, it’s not the value of animals it’s how they die. Getting beaten to death or died through lethal injection, there’s a huge difference. Dogs do have a more highly adaptive cognitive level than do chickens or cows. And you could probably say that more goes on in their head as they’re getting ripped apart. Everything feels pain, but crushing a bug or beating a dog to death is entirely different.
By the way, the law is deciding michael vick’s legal fate. What he did is against the law. People don’t value their animals more than their families, but take a poll and most people love animals because they do have enduring value.

Eating meat and dog fighting are two completely different things. While the killing an animal, particularly if what you say is true (which I doubt), is a sad thing in general, at least it’s being eaten. The dogs probably just got thrown in a pit somewhere, fed to eachother, or a dumpster in a trash bag.
On top of which, the killing of perfectly innocent and good dogs just because they aren’t “worthy of the pit”.
So what if someone values animals more than their own family? At least humans have the law completely on their side, there are way more of them, and if they are killed, I’m sure a baby somewhere just replaced ‘em. We’ve gutted our poor planet, so there is plenty of sense in defending what is left of it and it’s inhabitants.

Vick IS a great athlete but he was never a good QB. He was never a GREAT human being.

No matter how many dogs he killed he’s still a great athlete and a shitty human being. He is now also an admitted felon and his actions have cost him his NFL career and proven without a doubt what a shitty human being he is.

There are a lot of great athletes that aren’t QB’s and a lot of great athletes in prison and a lot of shitty human beings in prison. Vick is all of those and will join them in prison.

Ok, this is a stupid website. If ppl think what Vick did was in any way, cool, good or something i would do, u r simply deluding urselves. I’m not the greatest fan of sports, i don’t really care if the NFL loses a good QB or not. But if Vick, after admitting his guilt, is not convicted, what lesson will be taught to all his young fans?? The thing that no one is realizing here is A) Eating meat and killing dogs are 2 completely different topics. Slaughter houses put down the animals in a humaine way so that they do not suffer. The animals feel no pain whatsoever, and plus, eating meat is good for you and should not be looked past due to moral values. Are you really going to keep a cow or sheep as a pet ??? i dont kno wat the fuk u all r talking about the animals r killed in a humane way. most of u have never even been to slaughter houses. my family have been getting their meat directly from the farms since i was a baby and wen u select ur animal (goat, pig, w/e) dey wrestle it down right in front of you, take a knife, and slit its throat while it screams for their lives…. they are still screaming for at least 20 minutes after a cut throat. then if its unlucky, it’ll still be alive as u burn it with flamethrowers so that all the insects and germs on the skin will be killed. i’ve witnessed this numerous amounts of times and everytime i felt sympathy, but wtf r u supposed to do about it if its legal. so i reely dont see no difference in wat micheal vik’s doing. u ppl talk about “o at least we eat it, not throw it way lik vick”. disclaimer: please read this without being the narrow minded assholes that you are. first off i have a dog and love it and would never fight it. do i agree with dogfighting…no. but the difference between me and you people hating on vick is that you guys are fucking hypocrits. not only do you guys eat slaughtered animals but have you ever fished before. dont say no you piece of shit every person has fished before. youre right stabbing a needle through a living animal in order to catch another animal and killing it by suffocating it and slitting its throat(that would be the fish) is totally not on the level of dogfighting. now youre probably saying that a fish and worm are not equal to a a dog but in that case that means you are a piece of shit who are trying to say they are not equal animals to lie to yourself because that exposes your hypocracy and proves that youre point is dumb. also you think michael vick should die. i totally understand your logic that since michael vick locked up animals, fought them, and killed them, that michael vick should be put in jail (hey kind of like a dog cage) and killed and put in hell. no that totally makes sense and really shows how you guys make alot of sense. get the fuck off michael vicks back.

What Michael Vick did is disgusting, and he deserves to be in jail (and should have gotten a much more severe sentence, but didn’t, since nonhumans are viewed as property by the law). However, I must say that for those who say what Michael Vick did was wrong, so is consuming animal products. Dog fighting and consuming animal products are both unnecessary for human survival, both exploit and cause violence to the nonhuman victims, and both are done for the gain of human pleasure.

The court only gave Vick the sentence they did (again, it was a very light sentence, trivializing his actions) because dog fighting isn’t a socially accepted institutional use of nonhuman animals, and the manner in which the dogs were used “wasted” the animal property, and was therefore deemed “unnecessary.” Whereas, the exploitation and slaughter of nonhumans for food is a socially accepted practice, and even though it violates the nonhuman animals’ interests, it is justified as being “necessary” because the exploitation and violence committed against these animals is required in order to facilitate their use for food. If you’d like to learn more about nonhumans as property by law and how that interferes with their humane treatment, read professor of law, Gary Francione’s books, “Animal Rights: Your Child or the Dog?” or “Animals, Property, and the Law”.

As for those saying that we vegans–who are simply pointing out that animal exploitation and violence is much broader than dog fighting–don’t care about nonhuman animals and don’t support exploitation and violence towards them just so we can feel we are “better” (whatever that means) than them, that is an astoundingly ridiculous thing to say. We are no more vegans to feel superior to nonhumans than are people against child exploitation to feel superior to children. It is NOT about feeling superior, but about having compassion for the vulnerable and affording equal consideration to all sentient beings, human and nonhuman. Should we exploit and be violent towards children or the severely mentally disabled because they cannot create symphonies or fantastic pieces of art? Is it worse when a child prodigy dies than when an average child dies? When a child is abused or murdered, do we ask if they were talented first to decide the severity of the abuser’s or murderer’s sentence? OF COURSE NOT. All that matters is that children and the mentally disabled are sentient. When we mourn a person’s death, it’s not because their IQ or talent was at a certain level, it is because they were sentient and could have experiences in life that they will no longer get to have. We may not accord children and the severely mentally disabled the right to vote or drive a car since those rights would be useless to them, but we still recognize them as having inherent value, and accord them the basic right not to be treated as a means to an ends–not to be treated as things. Similarly, nonhumans are sentient beings, and while the right to vote or drive a car would be useless to them, they deserve the basic right not to be treated as things.

Humans do not need to consume animal products in order to survive. While cave people sometimes depended on hunting for survival for food and warmth, that is not true for the overwhelming population of people today. People are omnivores, which means that we have the ability to obtain nutrients from either plant or animal sources, but it does not mean that we MUST consume animal products in order to survive. So why harm someone when you don’t need to? In regards to chimps “eating” monkeys, that was an observation by Jane Goodall in the 60′s in Gombe, and is a pattern more suggestive of social and territorial competition than of true predation, and possibly an aberration due to human presence or some other stress (considering this behavior is only evident in Gombe). Primatologists such as Geza Teleki, has calculated that even that only amounts to 1 to 4 percent of the Gombe chimps’ diet. Note that chimpanzee fangs are much larger than human “canine” teeth, yet they still eat mostly a vegetarian diet. Humans have also during times of war in our history, cannibalized their enemies as a method of displaying power, or as a way to “consume” the enemy’s “power.” An interesting book that covers this is “An Unnatural Order”.

Irregardless, there are carnivorous animals, omnivorous animals (whose diets have evolved to be more flexible and adaptable to their habitat), and herbivorous animals. The point is not what the rest of the animal kingdom has evolved to eat, but what food humans are able to survive on. We can be vegan and not compromise our health (providing one is not living off junk food like chips and soda). So, the compassionate thing for humankind to do is not exploit and slaughter nonhumans by the tens of billions annually, worldwide for pleasure.
